Obituary for James Freed
James "Slugger" Freed, 74, Lavelle, PA passed away Friday, February 10, 2017 at his home in Lavelle.
Born in Locustdale, PA October 5, 1942 the son of the late James and Elizabeth Reichwein Freed.
In his youth he had a love of baseball and played for the Locustdale team and the Lavelle Teener League. At age of 14, he became an organist for the Locustdale Evangelical Church, where he played for many years. Later on, he became an organist for the Lavelle Church of the Nazarene. After graduating high school he moved to Philadelphia and worked for General Electric. His last employment was for Tri State Envelope, Ashland where he drove tractor trailer for 36 years until his retirment. In 2003, Jim and his wife Mary became owners of Snyder's Restaurant, Ashland until 2009.
One of his greatest joys was entertaining at nursing homes playing his keyboard. Another favorite past time was riding his Harley Davidson. He loved woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren. Jim had a very generous and giving nature--he never shied away from helping anyone that needed help.
He was preceded in death by his wife Donna Stroble Freed and two sons, James and Brian Lewis Freed.
Jim is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary Scully Freed. One son, David husband of Amie Freed, Ashland. Two grandchildren: David and Crystal. Two great granchildren: Aiden and Sophia. Two brothers: John, husband of Dorian Freed Locustdale; Jerome husband of Lois Freed, Aristes. Two brothers in law: Lewis husband of Barbara Stroble, Mt. Carmel: Stewart husband of Phyllis Stroble, Shenandoah. Aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Lavelle Church of the Nazarene, Lavelle, with Rev. Jeremy Smallwood and Rev. Rose Marquardt officiating. Interment in Christ Church Cemetery, Fountain Springs, PA. Visitation will be held on Tuesday 9:30-11:00 AM at the church.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Lavelle Church of the Nazarene, Lavelle or Grace Evangelical Independent Church, Locustdale.
